Innovation Ecosystem Canvas

Is there a way to create a community from an innovation ecosystem? Wait, what is an innovation ecosystem?

This is one of the stars of the canvases together with the Collaboration canvas. The Innovation Ecosystem canvas could be used by ecosystem coordinators, network coordinators, community managers, team leads, association directors or founders that want to bring people together in high performing projects, collaborate and learn to innovate and transform the markets.

What is the Innovation Ecosystem Canvas

As an Innovation Ecosystems, it’s a across topic, across sector, across functional and maybe across regions and countries that are together on a mission to transform the industry, society and the future. For that an effective ecosystem they will leverage funding, opportunities, collaborate faster, leverage knowledge, support and networks. The objective is to leverage the power of networks of networks with a clear purpose.

Where and when to use the Innovation Ecosystem Canvas

At Collabwith, we introduce the concept of micro-ecosystem where startups or teams inside universities lead and kickoff movements of change, they are leaders and active agents of change. What is an innovation micro-ecosystem? TTOs team, R&D teams, innovation teams, incubators, accelerators, scientific communities, innovation hubs, industry associations focused on innovation, research team, research infrastructure, startup associations, innovation communities, etc.

If you are managing a community, micro-ecosystem, ecosystem, city and you want to transform the status quo. You can be a coordinator, manager, orchestrator, team lead for a research team, an incubator or accelerator, a startup, a tech park, a university, etc. Amazingly, you are facing similar challenges to bring people to the co-working spaces, or your offices, or your main building when you are organizing events, or attending workshops. Or that other teams, or stakeholders are not collaborating, everyone is in their own silo or organization and it’s difficult for them to see the value of innovation or why they are there.

How to use the Innovation Ecosystem Canvas

As a coordinator or change leader, regardless where you are, you can use the canvas from the pillar starting, then pillar preparation, then pillar definition and finally the pillar bonding.

The pillar starting will help you to set up the basics of your innovation micro-ecosystem, this is important to bring clarity on the topic, and the why the micro-ecosystem exits and who has to be part of the micro-ecosystem to be supported, to make sense, and analyse which stakeholders are there already and which stakeholders are missing, and have to be there.

The pillar preparation, it’s the second step to go deeper in the definition of the micro-ecosystem, in the phase is essential to identify aspects for the structure of the micro-ecosystem such as activities to bring people together, how the people access to the information, and how they share information among them, and the purpose why the members or teams or participants are part of the ecosystem. This pillar will find the first gaps of the community orchestration.

The pillar definition, it’s the step where you can define the topics and needs that really matter to the micro-ecosystem members, stakeholders, teams, organizations and how the micro-ecosystem can really support them with the right solutions. As a coordinator you have to balance out the mission of the micro-ecosystem with the needs of the individual members of the community. In this step, you define as well which digital and non digital tools you are using to perform the activities, information flow, etc.

The pillar bonding, it’s the final step where you as coordinator set the rules of how the community rules and transform a group of stakeholders into a really ecosystem-community type of, where values are translated into actions and programs, and where the education program is focused on educating the community into the mindset and values required to create a high performing ecosystem. In this step, it’s where you summarise the innovation micro-ecosystem into the manifesto to provide clarity to every member.
