Collaboration Canvas

Is there a guide to help with collaboration between research and business effectively?

This is a guide to help you to prepare a collaboration, to negotiation a collaboration or to review a project you are doing with one or several partners. This canvas is a guidelines that you can use to reduce the number of meetings, to go directly to the point, don’t to forget topics, negotiate better, and have an excuse to talk about critical issues like legal and money. It was created for a university-industry collaboration but at the end it could be used for any collaboration or partnership.

What is the Collaboration Canvas

Collaborating for innovation is an activity that can comprise co-brainstorming, co-creation, co-designing, co-researching, co-developing, co-prototyping, co-implementing, co-executing, co-going-to-market, co-adopting with experts, academics, startups, investors and other types of partners you can imagine in your value chain and ecosystem.

Innovation cannot be done alone. You might need to collaborate with academics to understand some parts of your idea, technology or concept, or maybe you need to know who can produce your new product, so you have to be an active part of your industry and of the ecosystem you are in. Make connections and collaborate. This is the fastest and strongest choice you can make for your business to create growth. Collaboration for innovation means that you might be making a change to how current factories are producing your new product, or how companies work together, and this is innovation too. You are innovating on two levels: one is your innovative solution, and the other is that you innovate in the process. For instance, you are innovating your whole value chain from practical to transformative. This canvas is part of the methodology from the book: Innovation and Collaboration in the Digital Era by J. Pascual.

Where and when to use the Collaboration Canvas

The canvas is useful to,

  • prepare collaboration concepts before sending a request of collaboration,
  • to pitch a more-than-one-partner project or consortium,
  • when you negotiate a collaboration to discuss all the 9 boxes and not to forget the important points to discuss to move forward,
  • To review an existing collaboration project or consortium

You can use it together with your team, with your potential partners, during negotiation meetings, with your legal team, etc. Or when you are in a call, you can bring the canvas (let us know if you want our “postcard canvas”, we will send you one for free via postal post), read it, and transform a normal conversation into a flow productive conversation that leads to concrete steps and decisions.

How to use the Collaboration Canvas

The canvas is a guideline to prepare project meetings, check current consortium projects, or collaboration projects going on and see what is missing, or what could be improved. The way is to use step by step, box by box, set 5 minutes for writing bullet points in every box, just writing everything that comes to your mind, let it flow.

Every person on your team can do the canvas by themselves individually, and then you put them in common together to create one canvas that can be presented to the potential consortium or collaboration partner as a pitch and have very productive conversations going forward.
