What is the Business Plan Canvas

The Business Plan canvas is a tool to guide you through the basics of creating a business from an idea. The business could be a startup, spinoff, a new project for your organization, a new revenue stream or a new innovative solution that you want to bring to the market.

Where and when to use the Business Plan Canvas

The Business Plan canvas is useful when you have a new idea and you want to create either a project inside your team, a new solution for your current business, or you want to spinoff a research result into a startup and new business. At that moment, it’s important to reflect not only on the solution your idea proposed, or only on the problem, but how is your mindset to go through the process of making a real solution from an idea (even if it’s a project), how you are going to sell it, and promote it. At the end of the day, a startup or a successful project is about the solution, but also how you present it to the world. The Business Plan canvas it’s the first approach, and it would give you the roadmap to stay on the line of the entrepreneurship or innovation journey. 

You can use the Business Plan canvas at any time of your journey, when you start and put your first ideas into paper, when you are some months into the journey, when you are some years into the journey. This means that entrepreneurship or creating new business models or new innovation projects or innovative solutions is not about one thinking-day, it’s an evolution and a journey that needs regular checkups. 

How to use the Business Plan Canvas

There are several ways to use the Business Plan canvas, as it’s built to be flexible and follows how the brain works when you jump from one idea to another. We recommend reading every box once, so you know what you have to think through. Then, you can do a 5 minute brainstorming moment, when you can bullet points answering every box, just write down what comes to your mind. As a second step, you can write down what information you are missing to answer properly the questions in every box, and reflect on what is important for you and what not, and what you tend to avoid, and what questions you lean towards. The order of the sections are in order of importance, mindset (inside work), product / solution (down to earth), collaboration (together, not alone), sales and marketing (outside work). For sure, all the sections are interconnected to each other, and you will notice that you cannot sell, if you are feeling fear, or you don’t have a clear solution, etc.
