SPOTLIGHT NADINE NEMBACH ON NEW EVOLUTIONS, NEW STARTS, AND MAKING IMPACT ALONG THE WAY

About you lately

I’ve been feeling a bit like I’m on a journey of constant learning and growth. I love how the field of psychology is evolving and how technology is opening up new ways to support people’s mental health and well-being in my work as a coach and trainer. At the same time, the developments in AI, especially concerning the governance and bias, are deeply worrying me. They are affecting more and more areas of our lives, with little or no protection for vulnerable people, very negative consequences for me as a business person and my visibility and a deep negative impact in the psychological field with governments and companies deploying AI friends and therapists.

I stay very much involved in fighting for gender equity and forming alliances e.g. with male allies to achieve a deep and sustainable systemic change that benefits us all. Professionally, it has been a challenging last year, with all the developments worldwide affecting my customers and their willingness and ability to engage in developing their structures and people. Mindset stays key in achieving a deep change.

Your morning routine

I find that having a consistent morning routine helps me feel more grounded and focused. My morning usually starts with a quiet moment for myself – whether that’s reading, journaling, or just enjoying a cup of tea. Then, I get to work on my projects or respond to emails. I try to make the most of my morning energy by tackling the most important tasks first.

How do you like to help people

For me, helping others is about creating a safe and supportive space where they can explore their thoughts and feelings. I believe that everyone deserves to be heard and understood, and I try to approach each conversation with empathy and respect. I find that active listening is key. When someone shares their challenges or concerns with me, I make a conscious effort to fully engage with them – to really hear what they’re saying, both verbally and non-verbally. This involves giving them my full attention, maintaining a non-judgmental attitude, and reflecting back what they’ve shared to ensure I understand their perspective. Another important aspect of how I like to help people is by empowering them to find their own solutions. Rather than offering direct advice or solutions, I often ask questions that help them explore their own thoughts and feelings. By doing so, I encourage them to tap into their inner wisdom and resourcefulness, which can be incredibly empowering.

For instance, I might ask someone to identify what they’re hoping to achieve or what they value most in a particular situation. This helps them clarify their goals and priorities, and can lead to a greater sense of direction and purpose. Alternatively, I might ask them to consider different perspectives or possible outcomes, which can broaden their understanding and open up new possibilities.

I also believe in the importance of validation and acknowledgment. When someone is struggling, it can be incredibly helpful to acknowledge their feelings and experiences, even if we can’t directly fix the problem. By doing so, we can create a sense of safety and understanding, which can be a powerful foundation for further exploration and growth.
Ultimately, my goal is to help others feel seen, heard, and supported. By creating a safe and empathetic space, empowering them to find their own solutions, and offering validation and acknowledgment, I aim to support them in their journey towards greater self-awareness, resilience, and personal growth.

What is your most creative moment you have had

I remember one moment that stands out as particularly creative. I was working on a project to develop an online mindfulness training with small learning nuggets for young adults. I was struggling to make the content more engaging and accessible, and ended up creating a narrative around a fictional character who embodied the values of mindfulness. My customer loved the idea, and I developed a storyline and characters that brought the learning nuggets to live. It was a fantastic example of how storytelling and creativity can be used to make complex concepts more relatable and appealing.

Do you have some tips to be always doing new things

Absolutely! I think it’s essential to stay curious and open to new experiences and learning opportunities. Here are a few tips that have worked for me:

Try something new every week: Whether it’s a new hobby, a different type of exercise, or a new recipe to try, making a commitment to try something new can help you stay engaged and motivated. Even small changes, like taking a different route to work or trying a new coffee shop, can help keep things fresh.

Explore new interests outside of work: Sometimes we get so caught up in our professional lives that we forget to explore our personal interests. Whether it’s reading, writing, painting, or playing music, make time for activities that bring you joy and help you relax.

Seek out new experiences: Travel, attend workshops or conferences, and engage with people from different backgrounds and industries. These experiences can broaden your perspective and help you learn new skills.

Learn something new every day: This could be a new word, a historical event, or a scientific concept. Even small increments of learning can add up and help keep your mind engaged and curious.

Take breaks and step back from routine: Sometimes, taking a break from your daily routine can help you see things from a different perspective and inspire new ideas. Whether it’s a weekend getaway, a walk in nature, or a meditation practice, make time for activities that help you recharge.

Embrace uncertainty and ambiguity: When we try new things, we often face uncertainty and ambiguity. Embracing these challenges can help us develop resilience and a growth mindset. Instead of being afraid of failure, view it as an opportunity to learn and improve.

Surround yourself with people who inspire and motivate you: Positive and supportive relationships can help keep you motivated and inspired to try new things. Seek out people who share your passions and interests, and don’t be afraid to ask for help or advice when you need it.

Celebrate small wins and accomplishments: When we try new things, it’s easy to get caught up in the idea that we need to achieve big things right away. Celebrate your small wins and accomplishments, even if they seem insignificant. This can help keep you motivated and inspired to continue trying new things.
Remember, the key to always doing new things is to approach them with an open mind, a willingness to learn, and a sense of curiosity. By incorporating these tips into your daily life, you can stay engaged, motivated, and inspired to explore new possibilities and experiences.

Are you using some innovation tools or collaboration tools at your work

Besides relying heavily on collaboration tools to stay connected with clients, colleagues, and the broader psychology community, like trello, slack, zoom or teams who form the backbone of collaboration, I am a happy member of the collabwith universe. I use a lot of training tools and platforms, like Tricat, Mentimeter, Moodle, Mural, learningsnacks, Canva to keep my trainings interactive, immersive and fun, as I believe having fun while developing yourself is the best way to do it.

How do you find your motivation

For me, motivation is a personal and dynamic force that can wax and wane depending on the day, the project, and my overall well-being. When I’m feeling stuck or unmotivated, I try to dig deep and explore the underlying reasons. This could be very personal, like the question of meaning and purpose: When I feel that my work has meaning and purpose, I’m more motivated to see it through. This might involve reflecting on the impact it will have, the skills I’ll develop, or the sense of accomplishment I’ll feel when it’s completed. Also, everything that catches my passions and interest is more easy to stay motivated for. As a deeply curious person you can get me with anything touching my personal growth and development: When I feel that my work is helping me grow and develop as a person, I’m more motivated to put in the effort required. This might involve learning new skills, expanding my network, or taking on new challenges. As you know I am working a lot with mindset, which is another area that keeps me on track: working continously on a growth mindset, visualising and reframing are vital for this.

I kick myself on a continous basis to take breaks and practice self care, mindfulness and resilience, to recharge and refocus. I sometimes find myself fighting with procrastination, when I’m feeling overwhelmed or uncertain. To overcome this, I remind myself of my goals and priorities, break down larger tasks into smaller ones, and practice self-compassion. Perfect is not only the enemy of the good, but sometimes my own personal one, which means I need to remind myself on making progress and just do it, rather than being perfect. By understanding my personal reasons for motivation, incorporating personal practices into my daily routine, and addressing personal challenges, I’m able to find and sustain my motivation, even in the face of obstacles and setbacks. It’s a continuous process that requires effort, commitment, and a willingness to adapt and evolve.

Your toolkit for keeping up with the psychology community

I’m using a lot of informational sources, like professional magazines, journals and databases. Apart from that, professional associations and networking keep me afloat. I love to visit congresses like the „Trainerkongress“ or „Tipps and Tools“ to meet my network and learn about new developments and ideas. Also online platforms and workshops are a big help to stay updated.  I collaborate with colleagues and peers on research and development projects, on advocacy projects as well as peer-reviewed manuscripts. This processes help me in staying current with the latest developments and research in psychology, and provides opportunities to receive feedback and guidance from experts.

ABOUT NADINE NEMBACH

Nadine Nembach, President of EWMD and psychologist for leadership. She started in 2018 at EWMD, when I attended the International Conference in Ingelheim. I was immediately impressed by a lot of things: the quality of the organization, speakers, workshops. However, what impressed her most were the women present. The multitude of occupations, interests, stories and nations. This has not changed ever since; it has intensified over my time being an EWMD member. As a network only lives and thrives with active members, She has joined in a lot of activities since becoming a member: Organization of the national conference Germany in Hamburg 2018 (concept + process team)CM responsible for Bavaria together with Katrin Neuendorf Big sister for new EWMD members Organisation of local events chapter Bavaria (events, speakers, rooms, invitations) E.g: Facilitation of the workshop “New Work Survival Kit – Resilienz mal ganz praktisch!” (Munich, 11.07.19) Development of Mentoring Programme EWMD Bavaria (in progress)It is an honour to work for EWMD international as International Co-President together with her colleague Tanju. They are working on an intensive international communication and collaboration amongst EWMD members and in connection with other associations and companies. As an international expert for leadership and customer delight, I travel the world for her customers. 34 countries and 68 nationalities so far. When working with people she feels it is most important to find the flow that will enable them to tap their potential and find out what they are able to do as individuals as well as organizations. Passion, energy and fun are prerequisites for this, and therefore some of the most important tools I use. Nadine’s background is a diploma in psychology. Being a trainer, coach, facilitator and speaker, she has been easing her customers’ path for more than 20 years on the way to (re-) discovering their golden thread.
