What is your Story as Entrepreneur? How was your moment when you decided to create your own company?
- Started at 14 – selling French Fries and Burgers from a food van at a beach in the South of Ireland. Great learnings.
- Started Autolink, a Car buying search engine next. Converted a bedroom into business HQ 🙂
- Started in Medical by designing and inventing Medical Mattress range for hospitals. Scaled and exited.
- Started an Innovation and Licensing Company, mainly in Medical.
Invented SimCair iCON in 2008. Infection Control Mattresses for for Healthcare. - After 12 years of saying that Infection Control is really important, now Coronavirus reinforces my message. This is the fifth startup and probably my last!

What is your company about? How did you come with the idea?
I set up Icon Global Innovations in 2017 to become and infection control innovation company. Its scaling now. I want to make our products available to all people across the world. Coronavirus and these infectious diseases are a new reality. We need products that can help in the fight against these superbugs and viruses and that’s what we do.
What is your purpose behind the startup? What is your business model and impact model?
Products that are good for patients and good for people. Reasonably priced solutions.
We can and will supply B2B and we will also scale out to B2C. We create and develop products that are good for everybody. For example, SimCair iCON a sleep surface that is comfortable, fully sealed and easy to clean. I believe this can become the new minimum standard in hospitals, care facilities, for patients at home and all other sleep surface markets such as Hotels, Resorts, Cruise Ships etc etc.

How are you promoting your startup and product? What is your PR and Marketing strategy?
We are trying to figure this out now. People and companies are in stasis. This coronavirus is changing the way we do things and I believe it will change the way we do things going forward. Business has to change also. I think CEO’s will think, we are paying millions to own or rent a huge building for employees/colleagues.
Why? What if half of them worked from home? I wrote a book last year which was called “Just Start Up”. In that I talked about working from home and that I believe will become the norm in a couple of years. However, look at whats happening now. People are working from home. I think that will largely become the norm, even when everything is back to a relative normal.

The 9 to 5 day in an office is, I believe, fast becoming obsolete. If somebody gets their job done, whether they have to work at 10am and 10pm, to me that’s totally fine. If the job is done, it’s done, irrespective of whether it took 2 hours and 12 hours in a day! Pay your team for getting the job done, not for being in the office at 9 and leaving the office at 5.
What kind of extra services your company is providing for your customers? Who is your potential customer?
Our potential customers are companies that want to have innovative infection control products to sell to their customers. Mattress manufacturers – we can supply our SimCair iCON cores for integration into residential mattresses. People at home who want to buy products that are easy to clean and therefore enhance hygiene in the home.

What is innovation for you? What is collaboration for innovation?
Innovation is everything for me and for us. Innovation is a mindset that should be nurtured everyday in companies. Innovation should be encouraged, welcomed and celebrated.
Innovation is having impact, and bringing the new product to the market. How are you selling your product and services to the established companies?
We are actually going back to traditional ways to reach people. A Phone call!
Regarding your funding, how did you finance your startup at the beginning? Did you receive external investment?
I have personally funded the business to date. But now, to make our products available across the world, I and we need external investors to scale.
Talking about finance, what are the best practises you learnt until now and you would like to share with other entrepreneurs?
Bootstrap in the beginning. But, when your business needs to be presented properly and professionally, you need funding. However, there is a caution! Choose your investors wisely. I suggest you find an Investor that fits with your vision for your business. Always, try to stay ahead of the curve and start looking for funds before your business is in desperate need of funds.

What are you doing during your spare time and weekends?
When I build a new startup, its 7 days, long hours and always on-call. When the start-ups are up and running, its much easier to take a break and have great holidays.
What is your morning routine? Coffee or tea?
Tea for Breakfast and Coffee no later than 10.30am….
What is your favorite place for holidays?
On a hammock by the beach!

SimCair® iCON – Established Infection Control and Pressure Care Technology
The SimCair® iCON mattress topper is made of a combination of visco-elastic foam and air. The ‘second skin’ outer layer of the mattress core is a Sealed Barrier Skin Technology and is therefore impermeable to liquids and ‘superbugs’ such as MRSA, C.difficile, and E-coli. This is another step in helping to prevent cross-contamination among patients. The highly elastic top layer and the air inside the mattress topper reduce friction, shear, and pressure on the patient’s skin tissue and therefore assists in the prevention of decubitus ulcers (bedsores). Patrick Noel Daly adds “Pressure reduction usually means better comfort, which usually means better sleep, and quality sleep is recognized as a key factor in maintaining a strong immune system. A strong immune system helps in fighting and beating these bad viruses, such as COVID-19. So, quality sleep and healthy sleep are really important!”
The prevention of cross-infection is becoming increasingly important due to the increased prevalence of ‘superbugs’ according to the World Health Organization.
